The Tigard Historical Association

The Tigard Historical Association was established in 1978 to move and restore the 1880 John Tigard House and to preserve the cultural and historical  legacy of the Tigard, Oregon area.

Its members have conserved the John Tigard House; built an ever-expanding collection of memorabilia, artifacts and furniture décor; conducted on-going research into the history of the area and its citizens; and held many seasonal events.

Celebrating Women's History Month In Tigard

Read About the Fearless Female Leaders of Tigard on the City of Tigard Webpage!  You will recognize these names; Mary Woodward, Grace Tigard Houghton,  LaVerne Sharp, Elizabeth "Betty" Jack,  Neva Root, Patricia Whiting and Alberta Craig Rider.  You can read about the significant contributions they made to our community during their lives.

Learn About the Origins of Tigard

Dr. Barbara Bennett Peterson wrote a feature article in "Tigard Life" that tells the story of how our Tigard was settled in 1876.  The City has come a long way since then and you can see the majestic John Tigard House at the corner of 103rd and Canterbury.  Built in 1880, the home was a wedding gift from Wilson Tigard to his son to John.

Pandemic permitting, THA hopes to celebrate Curtis Tigard memories at the John Tigard House in April 2023.

Dr. Barbara Bennett Peterson is a former professor of history at Oregon State University, the historian/writer for the Tigard Historical Association, which preserves the John Tigard House Museum, and a docent at Tigard Public Library’s Local History Room.

THA would like to acknowledge and thank "Tigard Life" publishing this article.

Curtis Tigard

Curtis was born on April 13,1909 and would have celebrated his 112th birthday on April 13, 2021!   Curtis passed from the Earth on July 25th, 2018.  He served in WWII and was one of "The Greatest Generation" even though he was shy about the title.  He was a man of great character and served all the citizens of Tigard.  Photo taken in 2017 (THA).
